Welcome to Synths About Town, the alternative Belfast club-night update by Julie Adams; it’s Twitch vs. Gigantic – The Birthday Edition.

The temperatures may be drastically dropping but the Belfast music scene is far from tepid. October serves up scoop after scoop of mouth-watering music from both local and international acts. So you can wave a firm goodbye to the quiet night in – things are going to get loud, lively and like out of hand. Just the way we like it.

To top it off, this coming Friday 17th sees the retrospective 8th and 9th birthday of two of Belfast’s heavyweights in alternative club nights; Twitch & Gigantic.

Twitch – a long since established night within the Queen’s Student Union is made up of DJ’s Phil Lucas, Matt Burns and Paddy Towe. The night is a long standing favourite among the local house and electro heads of the city, boasting an impressive host of renowned DJs and Producers from some of the musical cornerstones of the world. This all takes place within the intimate setting of the Union, creating a close knit community of club-kids passionate about great music and unholy amounts of craic. And this Friday promises to be no different.

With legendary underground Detroit House & Techno producer Omar S of the FXHE Record Label heading up the celebrations in the Bunatee – his soulful, minimal sound promises for a perfectly rounded finish to the absolute repertoire of bangers the Twitch residents never fail to serve up. Additionally you’ll be spoilt for choice by the delightful mixture of local DJ’s and producers offering up their sets in the adjoining Bar Sub. Fist pumping and ‘yeoooooing’ to be expected. In excess.

Alternatively Friday offers the 9th Birthday celebrations of Belfast’s longest running club night – Gigantic. Lovechild of AU’s Godfather Jonny Tiernan and local haunt Laverys; the night is an alternative institution within the city. A vibrant stomping ground hosting an eclectic mix of the latest cutting edge pop & electronic scattered amongst throwback decade favourites that’ll have nostalgia coursing through your veins while you twerk like Beyoncé on acid.

Newly branded Berlin boy Jonny will be jetting back to take control of the festivities, so impeccable tunes and tweed are an absolute given. It also presents the perfect opportunity to whip out that new power blazer you’ve been nursing in your wardrobe – the Gigantic locals form the outlines of the fashion frontier of Belfast, bringing a little bit of that euro-urban feel to our banter-beaten streets. So prepare yourself for a rainbow of hair colours and more beards than a Game of Thrones casting call.

Gigantic or Twitch…It’s like choosing which parent’s house to go to for post-divorce Christmas Dinner. Wherever you end up rest assured you’ll be waking up with blisters and a catalogue of addictive anthems that’ll rattle around your head for weeks to come.

Happy stomping!
