Welcome to the QR Committee ‘Pic N’ Mix’, probably the best and most eclectic collection of music tastes grouped together, ever…

The premise? The QR committee standing at almost 18 members strong, chose a song they’re loving this week and little bit of the reasons why, creating a vast varied playlist which you’ll find below. With 18 song choices, this is some list, you’ll find at the bottom of this post, a quick run down of the all the songs; only after you have delved deep into each and every one of them!

Here goes nothing…

Alan Irwin (Station Manager) – AC/DC – Play Ball

“Guy with AC/DC tattoo in loves new AC/DC song shocker”. Seriously though, the first song off the first DC album in six years is a corker. The sun will always rise in the east and set in the west, and AC/DC songs will always sound basically the same. Fortunately, they sound bloody excellent. A pounding riff, powerful vocals and a kick-ass solo all add up to a real return to form for yours truly’s favourite band.

Corey McKinney (On-Air Deputy Station Manager) – Ben Howard End Of The Affair

The first publicly realised track for Howard’s Sophomore album brings you everything you expect from the double BRIT Award winner. The publicly shy singer/ songwriter puts his entire heart & soul into his music and his new material sounds just as personal. Do yourself a favour and go check out his live performance of this track, the pure raw emotion at the songs close will blow you away.

Sarah Teggart (Off-Air Deputy Station Manager) – Lady Antebellum – Bartender

American country trio Lady Antebellum are back and better with their fifth studio album, 747, and this is Bartender, the lead single. Catchy and upbeat, Bartender deserves a spot on the playlist of every girls’ night out. While it doesn’t showcase the vocals of lead vocalist Hillary Scott quite as impressively as other numbers on the album, it’s a strong choice for lead single and will be in your head all day. Also, check out the video, starring supermodel Kate Upton and Arrested Development’s Tony Hale; its hilarious!

Alex Thompson (Treasurer & Head Of Design) – 20Syl – Seven Eleven (ft. Ibrahim Maalouf)

Producer & DJ 20Syl of C2C fame released his first solo EP ‘Motifs’ in June, with this track being just one of many hard hitting, sample heavy hiphop/electro beats on it. If you’re into the French electro scene, this guy is definitely one to watch and without a doubt listen to.

Chantelle Harvey (Secretary) – Rixton  – Me and My Broken Heart

Once you discover Rixton, you’ll never stop singing their catchy songs. These four guys from Manchester hit the music scene earlier this year with ‘Me and My Broken Heart’ from their debut album and continue to gain popularity through their new single released earlier this week, ‘Wait On Me.’ Acoustics and great hair, what more could you want?

Morgan McKinnon-Snell (Head Of Online Content) – STRFKR – Girls Just Want To Have Fun

We all love covers. No questions asked. STRFKR, normally spelt with a few more letters, that would mean a word a little to rude than one could allow on a QR blog-post, produce brilliant tracks like this for fun. It may be a five year old cover, but this is still my going out song.

RD Herdman (Head Of Music) – Travis – Why Does It Always Rain On Me?

This day has been sh*t. Why does it always rain on me?

Emma Jackson (Head Of Events) – George Ezra Blame It on Me

Anybody that knows me will know that I am obsessed with this man! His debut album, wanted on voyage is one of the best albums I have heard this year so far and this is the 4th song released of it It’s definitely one of my favourites, it is such an addictive song, definitely worth a listen!

Laura Sproule (Head Of Presenting) – The PiercesKings

The Pierce sisters bring psychedelic rock back to the fore with their song Kings. Reminiscent of 70’s rock, the song fuses high-rising, haunting vocals with a dramatic yet edgy percussion to deliver an almost ethereal vibe. It’s The Pierces doing what they do best, creating a mellow yet empowering track that’s just as good 100 listens later.

Calvin Black (Head Of News) – Fall Out BoyCenturies

So, once again, Fall Out Boy are back. This was released last month and is the first new song from FOB since April of last year. It’s typically grandiose and it definitely lies closer to Save Rock and Roll than any of their other albums in terms of style, but I’m not complaining.

Julie Adams (Head Of Advertising) – NautilussTroubleman

French Techno Producer Nautiluss of Turborecords has a repertoire of great records but for me this is both beautifully minimal yet so completely energising, the synths will be rattling about your head all day post-listen.

Jacqueline Lambe (Head Of Promotion) – HozierLike Real People Do

Love love love this song atm! Well I love the whole album in general, but this week this song is my favourite. It’s just so lovely and soothing. And SO CUTE.

Fortunate Ngubeni (Head Of Sound) – Pete Philly & PerquiaiteGrateful

Reminds me of how special we all are and its a dope song.

Simon McCartney (Co-Deputy Head Of Online Content) – David Gray – This Year’s Love

Going with the Classic David Gray and This Years Love. White Ladder is one of the best albums to relax and chill too. With his new album Mutineers released and his tour announced, there’s never been a better time to get back and listen to them chilled vocals

Andrew Warren (Co-Deputy Head Of Music)

Will Foot (Co-Deputy Head Of Music) – Freddie DicksonNews

Title track from Londoner Freddie Dickson’s debut EP; released this week. A healthy blend of Tom Odell and George Ezra best describe the haunting melodies that encompass News. An EP well worth listening to.

Tori Watson (Deputy Head Of News) – POLICIALay Your Cards Out

When I’ve had a stressful day, nothing chillaxes me more than putting my feet up, getting my earphones out, and playing this bad boy – (oh! and not forgetting a wee cup of cocoa….) ultimate satisfaction.
