Current QUBSU Speaker Fergal McFerran has been elected as the next NUS-USI President, at the NUS-USI conference at the Hilton Hotel in Templepatrick.

Fergal McFerran will commence his term as President of NUS-USI at the start of July, and will replace Rebecca Hall, who will have served the maximum two years as President. Fergal McFerran is a final year PPE student at Queen’s University Belfast.

McFerran said: “It is a massive honour to have been elected as NUS-USI President and I am looking forward to hitting the ground running in this role. NUS-USI has an extremely proud history of delivering positive change for students across Northern Ireland and working to deliver a shared future and equality for all.”

McFerran also talked about the big political year ahead for students as fresh elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly will take place in 2016.

He added that these elections “will have significant bearing on the future budgetary and social landscape” and spoke of how students shouldn’t be the target for budgetary cuts, as he claimed that cuts to further education could “create a lost generation and could significantly damage people’s future prospects.”
